He had photographs taken at the pyramids in Egypt 2 CONC . He was not impressed with the Egyptians he met, describing them as "dirty, smelly, dishone 2 CONC st perverts". He was at one time in Israel having photographs of Jerusalem and the Dead Sea 2 CONC . He was at Malta and Crete, Greece and Italy. He took part in the Normandy landings on D Day 2 CONC . He seldom talked about his war experiences other than saying "I didn't like the war - Peopl 2 CONC e kept trying to kill me" 2 CONT On his return he worked for Parsons Engineering in Newcastle on Tyne at Sheilds Road. 2 CONT The family home was at 18 Jullian Avenue, Walker Gate, Newcastle on Tyne. A two bedroom semi- 2 CONC detached house. The next door neighbour was George Ellis, a banker. 2 CONT My father did not try to keep up with the Joneses - for our street he was the Joneses. We ha 2 CONC d the first car, the first electric gramophone and the first television. 2 CONT In June 1958 (when I was 8) my father followed his brother, Jim's example and purchased a hi 2 CONC ll farm. We moved to 'Thrush Hall Farm, Carrshield, Hexham, Northumberland, an 18 acre farm i 2 CONC n the Pennines in the West Allen Valley. 2 CONT When we first moved our farm had no electricity and an earth closet (no flush toilet) We di 2 CONC d have indoor hot and cold water and could take a bath by lifting a worktop in the kitchen re 2 CONC vealing a bath underneath. Our water supply came to the house via a ditch running down one o 2 CONC f our fields. In wet weather the water turned brown with mud and when filling the bath occasi 2 CONC onally it would gurgle and out would drop a large worm. 2 CONT It was about two years before electricity was installed and at the same time we extended th 2 CONC e house to make an additional bedroom and a bathroom. 2 CONT My father tired of travelling 40 miles to work and got a new job working on the Blue Streak B 2 CONC allistic rocket at Spadeadam near Haltwhistle. He worked for Rolls Royce who were developin 2 CONC g the rocket engine. When the rocket project was cancelled by the government he got a job a 2 CONC s works engineer at Cascelloid, Haltwhistle, A firm which produced plastic bottles for deterg 2 CONC ent manufacturers. I remember being shown round the plant and having the drying ovens and con 2 CONC veyors which my father had designed and had built shown to me. 2 CONT He then worked for a laundry firm in Hexham. There he met Doreen and the relationship which d 2 CONC eveloped lead to my mother divorcing him in 1968. 2 CONT My father married Doreen and had a son, Ian, by her. He lived at 2 Eilensville, Hexham, North 2 CONC umberland. 2 CONT He next became a window cleaner until his retirement. 2 CONT He died of cancer in 1998. By 1834 the Headlam Directory listed 'Geo. Beechcroft esq. Alwe 2 CONC nt Mill is listed as 49 to 51 and 57. Hodgeson Emmerson is listed as tennant at Alwent Hall a 2 CONC nd John Chisman as the miller. 2 CONT 2 CONT After 1840, he moved to Alwent Hall a farm of 428 acres to the northwest of Gainford. The A 2 CONC lwent estate also contained a watermill which may have been the place where Richard Wilson Ch 2 CONC apman, his grandson, learnt his trade as a miller. 2 CONT 2 CONT In his will he mentions he intends to move from Headlam to Alwent Hall after evicting his ten 2 CONC nant Hodgson Emmerson. 2 CONT 2 CONT He left £50 per year to his son John Robinson Chapman and £10 per year to Richard Wilson Chap 2 CONC man. 2 CONT The bulk of his estate was left to his daughter Mary to be held for 8 years then turned ove 2 CONC r to his grandson William (the son of John Robinson Chapman). He died 1849 aged 81 years. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1856 Whellans Directory sheds some light on the 'and another' mentioned above: 2 CONT 1856 Parish of Gainford - William Chapman, Farmer, Alwent Hall 2 CONT Miss Mary Chapman, Inhabitant 2 CONT Alwent: A little to the south of Selby.
