What a con!

Not ours! Some years back when we were in Canada we bought the domain name jaydax.com. Times were very hard for us and when the domain name came up for renewal we just couldn't afford it and let it lapse. Just three days after it did lapse someone bought it and put up a site with affiliate links pointing to sites offering to make web pages. The site was also offered 'for sale' but we were too hard up then to purchase it back.

Earlier this year I noticed that jaydax.com was due to be renewed in September and when it had expired I contacted the registrant GoDaddy.com to see if I could purchase it. According to their web site the web site could be renewed by it's owner up to 42 days after it's expiry (a bit more than the 3 days I experienced). The domain however could be 'backordered' so that when it became available it would be mine. I paid the $18.99 backorder fee on 1st November and waited patiently for the domain to be mine againt

On November 8th the 42 days were up and I expected to hear from GoDaddy. When I heard nothing I logged on to their site and discovered jaydax.com was still marked as 'in redemption period'. I e-mailed GoDaddy asking what was the problem.email 1

Back came the reply:

response from GoDaddy

Now that's NOT what GoDaddy said on their web site but, no matter, it just meant that I had to wait longer.

On 2nd December I was pleased to see that the status of the domain had changed and it was now 'Pending Delete'. According to the information from GoDaddy this meant that it could now no longer be 'cancelled, transferred or renewed'

On 7th December the five days were up and I expected that it would be mine. Not so! I received a notification that my backorder had not been successful.

Checking I found that the domain had now been parked and now offered links to 'gay' sites and of course was offered 'for sale'.

So what does that mean to me?

Well I probably won't be dealing with GoDaddy's backorder service ever again because I'm not impressed with their misleading site information and even less impressed with their backordering service. I strongly recommend that anyone considering their backorder service should take a look at the 'Snatching a domain' link above to get a realistic picture rather than relying on GoDaddy information. I find it remarkable that within 5 hours of the 'Pending delete' status expiring, the domain had been purchased by someone other than GoDaddy despite being 'backordered' and the site had been propagated through DNS to point at a holding address.

I won't be blackmailed into buying jaydax.com by someone pointing it to 'gay' links.

IMHO whoever is responsible for the site:
