Busted
'broke' into the pop scene in early 2002. They consist of a trio Matt Jay, James Bourne and Charlie Simpson all hailing loosley from the North London area. The band formed after Matt and James got together and advertised for a third member in New Musical Express. 16 year old Charlie replied, auditioned and got the job. The group worked on getting their sound right, using self written material. Demos were produced and the band signed with Universal Island at the start of 2002. Their first single What I Go To School For drew rave reviews and reached Number 3 in September 2002. By the time they had released their first album it was pretty obvious that they had that 'something'. Despite more rave reviews the album had a slow start, getting to the top 40 but then leaving the top 100 again. It took weeks for it to become noticed again and it wasn't until their second single, Year 3000, was released in January 2003 that the album made it's way to the top 10 where it remained for several months. Year 3000 reached number 2 in the UK charts (despite some very odd maths in the lyrics - 1000 years for 6 generations). Strangley the US had for the most part never heard of Busted. We sent a Busted CD to our daughter in the US and this resulted in the sudden group of Busted Fans which formed in the Louisiana area where she lives. (Busted - you owe us!) With their third single, You Said No (Crash & Burn), the band set off on their first UK tour and during it You Said No reached the magic number 1 spot in the UK charts. Did you notice - they became the first act in UK chart history to have their first three singles hit Number 3, then 2, then 1? A Present For Everyone, their second album, was released in November 2003. Well, of all the things we thought we'd be telling you, this is certainly not it. We're sorry to say that Busted are officially 'Busted Up'. You can read more about it on their website. If you're as sorry for this breakup as we are, you'll want to complete your collection of Busted while you still can before it's too late!
