Our very First Java lake applet

Back in 1997 we discovered how to produce Java lake applet pages. The gold frame below shows our very first attempt.

"Merging of Souls"
~~~~~~~~
To the realms of forever
Through the mists of beyond
I will follow you always
We're intertwined together
 Our souls can be found
Where the Dream Faeire plays
Seeking earnestly to meet
With a whisper of hope
On a cascade of Joy
Our lives are complete
As spirits meld, hearts will cope
Master fate we employ
Our thoughts are sublime.
Poetry by: JayDax
Original Art by: Thomas Kinkade.
The original image was taken from a picture 'House by stream' by Thomas Kinkade. We cropped the original and flipped it horizontally to get what we needed. The poetry was a joint effort written line by line in ICQ. Dax wrote the first line, I the second and so on. We then went through it line by line making suggestions until we got the final version. We thought it reflected well our mood at the time.
We wrote to Thomas Kinkade asking his permission to use the image (even though we had altered it) and got a reply stating he liked the effect and we were welcome to use any of his images.
The poem did well too. It was published in an anthology and has, over the years, been copied onto at least three websites. (who said Plagiarism is the greatest form of compliment? - Sam Clemments?)
This applet was quickly followed by others and we got lots of nice comments in the guestbook we set up. Many asked how we achieved the effect so we wrote the first of our Java Lake tutorials the decendants of which you can still see here.
