The Thomas the Tank Engine series of books were written by the Rev. Wilbert Awdry for his son Christopher. The first book published didn't actually mention Thomas - he appeared in the second book.
After writing 26 books, Christopher took over the series and began writing
stories for his own son.
Thomas became internationally famous with the commencement
of the TV series in 1984, and has been delighting children
ever since.
