Before you start
screaming I'm wasting your time, stop and think about the question.
Just what is it that makes a sound a 'sound' and not 'music'?
First off, I think the safest thing to do it define
the word for you. Now since there are as many definitions of music
as there are types, even this can be difficult - but here goes.
According to The Oxford Illustrated
Dictionary, the
definition of music is the art of combining sounds for reproduction
by the voice or musical instruments in rhythmic,
melodic, and harmonic form so as to express thought or feeling
and affect the emotions.
Reflecting on the above definition would the beautiful
and versatile song of the blackbird be considered music? What
about your baby sister tapping away with her plastic spoon in
her porridge, or the horrible sound of someone scraping their long
fingernails across a blackboard? Is there any difference to
banging the the top of a metal rubbish bin with a metal spoon as
compared to beating a drum? You would be forced to admit, although
not all of the sounds I've just described would be considered pleasant
they do indeed 'make noise but, does just noise constitute 'music'?
I'm afraid not.
Music, is not just making random sounds, clicks,
taps or funny noise. Real music reaches out and touches the part
of you that no one else, other than maybe, if you're lucky, the
one you love sees. Want to know more? Click on the
