In
2001, Elton collaborated with Eminem on the rapper's 'Stan' at
the Grammy Awards which went a long way toward negating Eminem
of the charges of homophobia (a term used to describe someone that
has a fear or contempt for homosexuality or homosexuals), paving
the way for Eminem's mainstream acceptance. Also, in 2001, Elton
was due to appear on an episode of BBC's 'Have I Got News For You'
but declined very near to airing time. Elton achieved a number
one single in the UK, 'Ghetto Gospel' which would be featured on
2Pac's album, 'Loyal To The Game' (released after 2Pac's death
on 13 September, 1996). 'Ghetto Gospel' sampled Elton's 'Indian
Sunset' from his 1971 album, 'Madman Across The Water'.
On the 2 July 2005, Elton performed, 'The Bitch Is Back', 'Saturday
Night Is Alright For A Fight' and T-Rex' 'Children Of The Revolution'
with The Libertines and Babyshamles frontman, Peter Doherty.
After
living with his partner, David Furnish, (a former advertising executive)
since the 1990s, Elton and David were among the first to take advantage
of the UK granting a Document of Civil Partnership for same sex
marriages. Although the union is not recognized by the church it
does give each partner legal rights to the other. Among those to
attend the ceremony at Guildhall, Windsor were their parents, followed
by a huge guest list, including Victoria Beckham, Hugh Grant, Jemima
Khan, Boy Geroge, Joss Stone, Ringo Starr, George Michael, Tim
Burton and Helena Bonham Carter, Bryan Adams, Michael Caine, Donatella
Versace, Claudia Schiffer, Elizabeth Hurley, Sting, Sharon Stone,
The Pet Shop Boys, Stephen Gately, Elvis Costello, Jaime Cullum,
Sarah Ferguson, Kid Rock, Cilla Black, Lulu, James Blunt and The
Osbournes. The event was documented in the Sun newspaper with headlines
reading "Elton Takes David Up the Aisle'. It has been decided
that, although the normal title for the spouse of a 'Sir' would
be 'Lady', David will not receive the honorary title. Let's face
it - Lady David? I don't think so!
