Ancestors of John Robinson Chapman

Fifth Generation

16. Richard Wilson Chapman was born in 1819 in Kirby Stephen, Westmorland, England. He was christened 1 on 5 Nov 1821 in Kirby Stephen, Westmorland, England.

Bishop's Transcripts - Northumberland & Durham, Department of Paeleography, Durham University.
"1821 November 5 : Richard Wilson, son of John Robinson and sarah Chapman of hedlam nr. Gainford, schoolmaster, baptised."
Microfilm - Leeds Public Library.

Family tradition states he had no time for daughters. He may have disapproved of his sister Mary who had several illigitimate children
His occupation - Miller (Journeyman), Later a miner.
He was known to have lived on income
He at one time lived at Manor House Bishop Middleham but was NOT there during the 1851 census
Possesed a stuffed crocodile which reportedly came from Headlam Hall.

My great Aunt Sally (Sarah Chapman) remembers visiting him and seeing the crocodile hanging behind the door in the entrance hall, however, there is something odd about this recollection since Sally was born in 1904 and Richard Wilson Chapman died in 1897. Perhaps she was relating the memories of an older sibling, possibly that of Esther or Cicely.

Durham Mill - Now the University BoathouseBoth the age stated on the census and the age stated on his gravestone support his birth in 1819 rather than 1821 indicated by his christening

I think it's highly likely that he bacame a miller as a result of his grandfather John Chapman owning Alwent Mill. That's Alwent Mill in the picture above. At the time of his son, John Robinson's birth, he was a miller working ar Durham Mill. The picture right shows the Durham University Boathouse which used to be Durham Mill

He was buried 2,on 8 Aug 1897 in Bishop Middleham, Co. Durham, England.
