The expression ‘Rule of thumb’ is believed to originate from a judgement made in 1782 by English Judge Sir Francis Buller who supported a commonly held belief that a man was allowed to beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb. He was shown in a Punch cartoon as carrying a bundle of sticks labelled "thumbsticks - for family correction: warranted lawful!"
