Follow the Tyne upstream
You're looking at the north pier at the entrance to the River Tyne, this area is called Tynemouth. On the south bank, it's called South Shields, a little further inland is North Shields.
The Tyne has for many years, been a major port in the UK. For years also, it was the centre of ship building, a major coal industry, heavy engineering and glassworks.
The Tyne is still a port - You can catch a ship from here to Scandinavia, but now, the coal industry, ship building and glassworks have all but disappeared. , .
